About James Brandess

The studio & gallery is housed in a historic building that was once the Post Office of Saugatuck, Michigan.

James Brandess was born in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1989. Of His work, Brandess Says, "I paint from observation. My paintings reflect the harmony that surrounds me." Currently Brandess maintains his studio in Saugatuck, Michigan.

"I want to make paintings that are powerful, encompassing, and that speak to our age. In the landscape I seek those elements that, when they come together touch all of our senses. These elements include the light, the dark, the mist, the sky, the land, the trees, the water, the rain, the snow, and, of course, the wind. To paint the landscape in an unadorned and uncomplicated fashion is in and of itself a statement. My wish is that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren can make their own visual response to a natural environment"
